Google has announced that it is removing its AI assistant, Gemini, from the main Google app on iOS devices.

Instead, users who want to continue using Gemini will need to download the standalone Gemini app from the App Store.

By shifting Gemini into a dedicated app, Google aims to better its AI’s visibility as a standalone product rather than as a secondary feature within the larger Google ecosystem.

The decision, however, comes with risks. The Google app is already installed on millions of iOS devices, and many users may be hesitant to download yet another app, even if they use Gemini frequently.

This could lead to a reduction in Gemini’s overall reach, as some users may not take the extra step of installing the standalone application.

Nevertheless, Google is betting that those who are truly interested in AI-powered assistance will make the switch, especially given the advanced capabilities available through the Gemini app.

Google notified customers of the change through an email that explicitly stated, “Gemini is no longer available in the Google app.” (via: 9to5Google)

The email encouraged users to install the dedicated Gemini app if they wanted to continue accessing its features.

Notably, this app has been available to iOS users globally since late November, but until now, Gemini remained accessible through the main Google app as well.

With the standalone Gemini app, users will be able to engage in AI-powered conversations via text, voice, or even by using their camera.

One of the key features is Gemini Live, which allows for real-time voice interactions with the assistant.

Additionally, users can integrate Gemini with Google services like Search, YouTube, Maps, and Gmail, allowing for a more seamless AI experience.

Other capabilities include AI-generated summaries, in-depth topic explorations, travel planning, and image creation.

For iOS users attempting to access Gemini through the Google app, a full-screen message will now appear, informing them that “Gemini now has its own app” and providing a direct link to the App Store for installation.
