Leaked photos of DJI’s Mavic 2 show a possible modular camera and 360° avoidance tech
Will DJI’s new consumer drone be announced shortly?
Just a heads up, if you buy something through our links, we may get a small share of the sale. It’s one of the ways we keep the lights on here. Click here for more.
DJI is the top company in the North American market for personal drones, with over 70% market share. That lofty position also comes with a history of keeping its new products unannounced until they want. Back in January the new $799 Mavic Air leaked, and was promptly followed by an official unveiling. Will that pattern hold true here with the leak of what looks like the upcoming Mavic 2?
It’s impossible to miss the Mavic 2 branding on this leaked image. You can roughly tell the scale of the drone by the hands near it, coming at slightly larger than the Mavic Air but still compact enough to transport easily once the arms are folded back. The rumor mill is in overdrive also, saying that the camera is modular so you can swap it out for different uses.
Other snippets of information going around are hints of improved 360-degree obstacle avoidance technology, which is a big feature for a consumer-focused drone and will let you record video more easily in environments such as between trees and bushes without (hopefully) hitting anything that might damage your drone.
The information leaks came after DJI announced a new event on July 18th that has since been canceled, presumably for a new product launch.
A new date hasn’t been set, which would point to the drone not being quite ready for release. DJI hasn’t put out any official comments on the leaked drone, but as always we’ll bring you more information as we get it.
We reached out to DJI but they did not immediately respond to our request for comment. We’ll update the post if we hear anything back.
Editors note: DJI got back in touch and basically told us that the company does not comment on rumors.
Excited for a revealing of the new Mavic 2? What are you hoping to see featured on the new model? Let us know in the comments.
