Microsoft is currently dealing with an issue that makes Xbox Ones basically unplayable

This is why people worry about always connected consoles.

Update: The Xbox Twitter account says the issue has now been resolved.

If you have tried to log on to your Xbox One console in the last couple hours, you might have noticed some glaring issues. Issues as in, black screens and the inability to connect to basically anything.

What is causing this is still unknown, but Microsoft is now aware of the problem and is working on a solution.

Ironically, not only is Xbox Live having issues, but the status page has also been experiencing issues, meaning that those confused (or worried about their console) were having major difficulties figuring out just what the hell was going on.

While Microsoft continues to look into the issue, if you are trying to play online games, it seems you’ll have to wait. Even when trying to play single player games you may run into problems. It seems if you want to avoid that at present, disconnect from the internet and play it that way.

How to fix the issue (possibly)

While many people are still struggling with the Xbox One black screen, there have been some ways reported that could fix the issue.

Method #1

Coming from Reddit, user Stefvr, notes that a quick button combo can fix the issue.

“Solution found; after going home, pressing RT and Y straight after it started moving around my pins and kept homescreen alive, still not fading to black anymore, i count this as fixed in my case.”

Others have chimed in, as well, stating this fix worked for them, so this should be the first thing you attempt.

Method #2

Not as easy as the method above, this method requires you to do a couple things:

  1. Disconnect your Xbox One from the internet while your Xbox is on
  2. Turn off your Xbox One
  3. Turn it back on (still, without an internet connection)
  4. Once an Xbox tile featuring a game (or anything) pops up, reconnect to the internet
  5. It will go through the connecting process and should fix the black screen issue.
