New Apple Watch X display rumor hints at an extended battery life

This year’s Apple Watch X is rumored to bring ambitious upgrades to Apple’s smartwatch lineup, including a supposed redesign and a new band attachment system. A new rumor suggests the 10th iteration of the Apple Watch could also receive a display upgrade.

According to a report from The Elec, Apple is eying a new power-saving display technology for the unreleased Apple Watch X’s OLED display, which would likely extend its battery life.  

The Cupertino firm reportedly plans to use a new low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) thin-film transistor (TFT) technology, which is said to reduce power consumption further.

No microLED panel for the Apple Watch X

Apple currently uses a different method for its smartwatches, applying oxide to two TFTs while using low-temperature polycrystalline silicon (LTPS) to switch and drive TFTs.

On the other hand, with this new method, Apple plans to use oxide to switch and drive TFTs.

However, the LTPS isn’t disappearing and will reportedly be used on the remaining TFTs and circuits outside the viewable pixel space.

There were also previous rumors that Apple would use the new microLED panel for the upcoming Apple Watch X. 

However, Apple has scrapped those plans since and has dropped the suppliers. 

The good news is that this new display technology could work as a stepping stone for Apple, bringing it to more Apple devices if it is successful.

Reportedly, Apple is already considering bringing this new LTPO TFT display tech to the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max and all four models of next year’s iPhone 17 series.
