Announced alongside a new Genesis Mini at Sega Fes 2019, Sega also let fans know that Sonic and Mario are heading back to the Olympics, this time in Tokyo.

Sonic and Mario first teamed up for the Olympics on the Nintendo Wii in 2007 and with this announcement, we’ll be seeing four different games from Sega all involving with the Olympics.

As mentioned above, there will be four different games in total. Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 will be available for the Nintendo Switch, and there will be an arcade version, as well. The Switch version is releasing winter 2019, while the arcade version is scheduled for a summer 2020 release.

There is also Olympic Games: The Official Video Game being released in 2020 for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. It looks interesting, but without the charm of the characters like Mario and Sonic, I’m not sure how well it will be received, but time will tell.

The last game, Sonic at the Olympic Games – Tokyo 2020 will be releasing on iOS and Android in the summer of 2020.

Not too much is known about any of these games, but if the trailer is anything to go by, all will feature various Olympic activities and teams to choose from. Let’s hope Sega isn’t biting off more than it can chew, because it seems to be a bunch of different game modes that will require lots of work to make sure each one is enjoyable and well thought out.
