MediaTek has unveiled its Dimensity 9400 chip, which will power flagship Android phones and tablets starting in late 2024. This chip, built on TSMC’s 3nm process, boasts significant improvements in performance and efficiency over the Dimensity 9300.
It will compete with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 4. By the end of 2024, we should start hearing about the first phones that will ship with the flagship MediaTek Dimensity 9400 SoC.
However, it’s likely that the first MediaTek Dimensity 9400-powered phone may not come out until 2025. Anyway, let’s check out what the new MediaTek flagship chipset has to offer.
MediaTek Dimensity 9400 with Agentic AI Engine and tri-fold support
MediaTek says that the Dimensity 9400 offers 40 percent better energy efficiency, 35 percent higher single-core CPU performance, and a 28 percent increase in multi-core performance compared to its predecessor. The chip features an all-big-core design, led by a high-powered Arm Cortex-X925 core.
Another notable upgrade is a 12-core Immortalis G925 GPU, which delivers 41 percent more graphics power and enhances ray tracing by 40 percent while being 44 percent more power-efficient.
MediaTek also upgraded the memory to LPDD5X, improving performance by 25 percent, and the image processor supports 8K video at 60fps with enhanced HDR.
The chip’s AI capabilities are driven by MediaTek’s 8th-gen neural processing unit (NPU), which supports Agentic AI with double the diffusion performance and 80 percent better handling of large language models (LLMs), all while consuming 35 percent less power.
The Dimensity 9400 is the first SoC to support on-device video generation and LoRA training on the phone, allowing powerful AI-driven video applications.
MediaTek says the new SoC supports 180Hz refresh rates at WQHD+ resolutions. However, a “tri-port MIPI interface” feature allows the Dimensity 9400 to work with a tri-fold foldable, suggesting that the Dimensity chip will be available for any manufacturer wishing to produce a tri-fold device in 2025.
MediaTek has confirmed that OPPO and Vivo will release phones featuring this processor. It will be available in the Vivo X200 series when it launches on October 14 in China.
In the upcoming weeks, OPPO is anticipated to introduce the Find X8 series with the Dimensity 9400. However, we may not see the global release of a Dimensity 9400 phone before 2025.
