Apple is working on LLM Siri to compete with ChatGPT

Apple is reportedly working on a major overhaul of Siri, aiming to make it more conversational by integrating a large language model (LLM) backend similar to ChatGPT and other AI platforms. 

This ambitious upgrade, rumored to debut with iOS 19 in early 2026, signals a significant shift in Apple’s AI strategy and could transform users’ interactions with Siri.

Initially, Apple hesitated to embrace AI-powered chatbots, with earlier reports suggesting that Siri would not adopt a conversational format akin to ChatGPT.

However, advancements in AI and shifting user expectations appear to have prompted Apple to reconsider. 

Apple’s Siri will get buffed with iOS 19

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is actively developing an LLM-based Siri capable of handling natural, back-and-forth conversations.

Apple is progressively improving Siri’s capabilities, setting the stage for a more intelligent and conversational assistant. 

In iOS 18.1, updates included improved animations and fewer errors in voice interpretation, but Siri’s reliance on external tools like Google Search or ChatGPT highlighted limited AI integration. 

A key development is the App Intent System, which enables Siri to access portions of app features and on-device user data.

This allows for more personalized and context-aware responses, such as suggesting actions based on calendar entries and location data.

Despite these advancements, Siri remains primarily functional for basic tasks like setting timers and controlling devices, lacking deep contextual knowledge of user preferences. 

The transition to a large language model (LLM) backend will transform Siri, enabling dynamic, interactive conversations and unifying Apple’s fragmented AI tools under a cohesive interface. 

This “Siri LLM” could serve as the centerpiece of Apple’s AI ecosystem, offering highly personalized assistance but facing challenges like mitigating AI-generated inaccuracies.

The Siri LLM is anticipated to be revealed at WWDC 2025 as part of iOS 19, with a broader rollout expected in early 2026.

If successful, Siri could become a more proactive and competitive player in the AI space alongside rivals like OpenAI and Google.
