Google is finally adding a reader mode to Chrome

By the way, it’s 2019.

Google is planning to include a reader mode on Google Chrome for desktop. For the uninitiated, reader mode allows users to browse a web page without any of the unnecessary background clutter found on traditional websites. Reader mode is perfect for folks who want to read articles without getting slammed with ads, video pop-ups, and newsletter subscription boxes. Not to mention, it loads pages a whole lot faster too.

Reader mode is pretty much a standard feature for other web browsers. Microsoft’s Edge has had this feature since 2016. Firefox and Safari added them in 2017. Why Google is so late to the party is beyond me, but hey, here we are.

Chrome’s new reader mode is available today for Chrome’s experimental Canary release, but ZDNet reports that it should be making its way to the regular version of Chrome sometime shortly.

If you’re looking to try it out, you’ll need an updated version of Chrome’s experimental Canary release. To get it, type this in your URL bar: “chrome://flags/#enable-reader-mode”. From here, toggle reader mode on and restart your browser. Once you find a page where you want to activate reader mode, just click on the settings button on the top right of the browser and select “Distill page.”

That’s it. Reader mode activated.
