Recently, we reported that Google had canceled the Pixel Tablet 3, the presumed name of the company’s third-generation tablet.
That had led us to believe that the Search Engine company is likely ready to give up its tablet ambition after the unreleased Pixel Tablet 2.
However, that may not be the case. Android Authority has reasons to believe that the device mentioned in yesterday’s report was the Google Pixel Tablet 2, not the third-generation tablet.
Pixel Tablet 2 is done, but the Pixel Tablet 3 may still be in the works
Android Headlines published an article yesterday claiming that Google has canceled the development of the Pixel Tablet 3 and is actively working on the Pixel Tablet 2.
However, today, the Android Authority refuted that claim. Citing unnamed sources, the outlet claimed that the “kiyomi” codename shared by the Android Headlines article belongs to the Pixel Tablet 2, not the third-generation Pixel Tablet.
The outlet also stated that while they cannot definitely tie the “kiyomi” code name to the Pixel Tablet 2, they have provided a few interesting details in favor of their claim, suggesting the canceled device is not the Pixel Tablet 3.
According to AA, there’s strong evidence that the Pixel Tablet codenamed ” Kiyomi,” will be powered by the Tensor G4 SoC, the same chip that powers the Google Pixel 9 series.
However, according to a Google chip’s roadmap leak a few months back, which was covered by AA, suggested that the Pixel Tablet 3 will be powered by the Tensor G6 SoC and was planned for 2027.
In contrast, the Pixel Tablet 2 was planned for 2025. In hindsight, it doesn’t make sense that Google assigned engineers to work on a project that is set for 2027 with the Tensor G6 chip while the 2025 Pixel Tablet 2 is still in its prototype stage.
According to the previous leak, Google was working on a Wi-Fi-only and a 5G variant of the Pixel Tablet 2, along with a keyboard with a touchpad accessory to boost productivity. The new accessory was supposed to be the highlight of the device.
Unfortunately, It’s a pretty confusing situation, to say the least. While Andoird Authority has provided ample evidence corroborating its claim, a spec of doubt still lingers.
On the bright side, if AA’s claim is accurate, the third-generation Pixel Tablet is still in the works, and it could come with some mighty upgrades, though it may not be named Pixel Tablet 3.
