Netflix has announced price increases for its subscription plans in the US, Canada, Portugal, and Argentina. The increases affect both ad-supported and ad-free tiers.
The changes follow the company’s October price hike and mark the first increase for its ad-supported plan since its introduction in 2022.
According to the latest earnings report, the basic ad-supported plan will rise from $6.99 to $7.99 per month.
Netflix raises prices across plans
Netflix told The Verge that it plans to notify subscribers via email about the timing of these changes. The revised pricing for all tiers includes the following:
- Ad-supported tier: $7.99/month (up from $6.99).
- Standard tier: $17.99/month (up from $15.99).
- Premium tier: $24.99/month (up from $22.99).
With these increases, Netflix solidifies its position as one of the priciest streaming services. By comparison, Amazon Prime costs $14.99 per month, Disney+ is $15.99, and Hulu without ads costs $18.99.
Despite its high cost, Netflix maintains a perception of value through its extensive content library, including hit series like You and Squid Game, a variety of anime, and popular movies.
Recent high-profile live events, such as NFL games, Mike Tyson fights, and Mariah Carey’s concert special, have drawn significant viewership, signaling a growing emphasis on live sports and event programming.
The company explained, “We occasionally ask our members to pay a little more so that we can reinvest to further improve Netflix.”
Furthermore, some T-Mobile users may find relief, as the carrier subsidizes part of Netflix’s cost for its customers.
Netflix justified the price hikes by citing increased programming investments and a commitment to delivering better value to its subscribers.
These changes coincide with significant growth in the platform’s user base.
In the most recent quarter, Netflix gained 19 million new subscribers, bringing its total to over 300 million worldwide. It represents the largest single-quarter increase in the company’s history.
