Today, at the 2023 Galaxy Unpacked event, Samsung unveiled the much anticipated Galaxy Z Flip 5 and other Galaxy family products — Galaxy Z Fold 5, Galaxy Tab S9, and the Galaxy Watch 6 Series.
Samsung’s clamshell smartphone, the Galaxy Z Flip 5, has had many upgrades over the last generation, including new hardware, software features, and a brand-new design.
Here’s everything you need to know about the new Galaxy Z Flip 5.
The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 is the latest iteration of the company's clamshell foldable phone. It packs in all the Samsung goodness, and a bigger and more usable cover screen, called the Flex Window, while keeping the same $999 starting price.
Galaxy Z Flip 5 design
The new cover display (Flex Window) is the most significant upgrade to this year’s Flip 5. That said, we can’t just ignore the unique hinge design.
The new teardrop hinge allows the flip phone to shut entirely, making the clamshell phone 2mm thinner when folded. It’s better for preventing dust and debris from entering the inner display.
It’s good that Samsung has adapted to this design, which we have seen in other clamshell foldables like the Oppo Find N2 Flip this year.
- Expansive, Cinematic Screen: Unfolding the Galaxy Z Fold5 reveals a whopping 7.6'' screen that's perfect for streaming on the go. No more squinting at tiny screens - this is mobile entertainment like you've never seen before.
- Next-Level Gaming: With its impressive processor and high refresh rate, the Galaxy Z Fold5 offers a gaming experience that's both powerful and portable. Play on the cover screen or unfold for an even more immersive session.
- Dual-App Viewing: Multitask like a pro with Dual-App Viewing on the Galaxy Z Fold5. Drag and drop photos into messages, shop two sites simultaneously, or stream videos while scrolling through your feed.
- S Pen Compatibility: Turn to-dos into dones with S Pen capability on the Galaxy Z Fold5 (sold separately). Write directly onto the large screen for increased precision and productivity.
The new hinge also uses fewer moving parts, increasing its durability and longevity. However, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 is also rated for 200,000 folds — the same as previous Samsung foldables.
Regarding rating, the early rumors suggested the Z Flip 5 would get a total IP68 rating; however, it didn’t come through. The device is still stuck at the IPX8 rating, like the Galaxy Z Flip 4.
So, the phone is protected against immersion in shallow water when submersed for up to 30 minutes.
Unfortunately, there’s no protection against dust. So, you need to be careful. Lastly, similar to Samsung’s previous flip phones, the fingerprint scanner is on the side of the phone.
The Galaxy Z Flip 5 is available in multiple new colorways — Graphite, Cream, Lavender, and Mint.
That’s not all. A few Samsung.com exclusive colors are Gray, Blue, Green, and Yellow. Unfortunately, unlike its predecessor, the Galaxy Z Flip 4, there will be no Bespoke Editions.

Samsung didn’t hold back with the Flip 5 specs. The device is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 Galaxy chipset. That means it’s the same overclocked variant used on the Galaxy S23 series. So, top-notch performance is expected.
The overclocked SoC is paired with 8GB of memory, which isn’t bad. However, there are flip phones on the market with 12GB memory under $1,000.
There are also two storage variants — 256GB and 512GB. Unfortunately, Samsung dropped the 128GB variant.
The most significant change regarding the displays is the external cover display. Now, Samsung is calling it the Flex Window. At 3.4 inches, the Flex Window is more important than last year’s 1.9-inch cover screen.
The flex display is larger and has a new folder icon shape with a notch on the left. However, the Flex Windows only has a 720p resolution at 60 Hz. Despite this, it is still significantly improved compared to last year’s display.
The internal display is excellent, as usual. It’s a 6.7-inch AMOLED panel with a 120Hz refresh rate and a 1080p resolution. However, Samsung has introduced a new screen protector this year.
According to the company, the new screen protector uses a superior adhesive that prevents bubbling and other issues. Gorilla Glass Victus 2 covers the Flex Window and the other rear panel of the phone.
The Galaxy Z Flip 5 doesn’t have any significant camera improvements. It still has two 12MP wide and 12MP ultrawide cameras on the back, the same as the Galaxy Z Flip 4.

The image quality will likely be the same unless significant image processing upgrades exist. Samsung hasn’t discussed much in that department, however.
Samsung claims it has updated the spray coating over the rear lenses to prevent lens flares. The 10MP selfie camera is at the center of the internal display and features the same hardware.
Lastly, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 features a 3,700mAh battery with 25W wired fast charging speed. There’s also 15W wireless charging and 5W PowerShare.
New Galaxy Z Flip 5 software features
The center of attraction for this year’s Galaxy Z Flip is the new Cover Display, or the Flex Windows, as the company calls it. It’s larger and differently shaped, and Samsung has added a few new tricks to make it more functional.
Samsung is launching the device with 13 widgets designed to work with the Flex Window.
For example, you can take selfies with the rear camera, respond to a text message, or pay for something using Samsung Wallet and multiple other utilities without accessing the main internal screen.
In addition to those widgets, there are apps in the “Labs” section of the Flex Window launcher. Google Maps and WhatsApp are two notable apps to appear here.
Galaxy Z Flip 5 price and availability
The Galaxy Z Flip 5 starts at the same price as its predecessor in the United States, at $999.
However, you are getting 256GB storage for the same price this time. It’s a generous upgrade. If you need more storage, a 512GB variant is also available. The UK variant starts at £1,049.
The Galaxy Z Flip 5 is available for pre-orders globally with some extraordinary deals. However, general sales will begin later on August 11th.
