Apple’s iPhone is the most popular smartphone in the United States. A whole lot of people are running around with iPhones — but that doesn’t mean that they’re all taking care of these expensive devices in the way that they should be.

Unfortunately, some of the coolest parts of the iPhone’s design are also what makes the phone vulnerable. That cool glass screen? Yeah, that can break. The slim design? Not necessarily the sturdiest. Having an iPhone is great, but it can also be a little stressful. You have to take care of this thing!

Relax — we can help. Here’s what you need to know about taking care of your valuable iPhone.

Should you get an extended warranty?

You can protect your iPhone with warranties. Apple’s own AppleCare product is a solid option, and individual retailers may offer warranties of their own.

Is a warranty right for you? Well, that all depends. If it makes you feel more secure and relaxed, by all means, get your iPhone covered. But you should make sure that you know exactly what your warranty does (and does not) cover. Not even Apple’s own AppleCare covers everything, and if you mistreat your phone, you’re going to be unhappy when you find out that your damage isn’t covered.

Invest in a case and a screen protector

The iPhone is a cool-looking device, but there’s a reason that so many people cover theirs up with sturdy protective cases. If you drop your iPhone, you’re definitely going to want a nice solid case around it when you do!

A screen protector is a must, too. Screen protectors make screens strong and absorb the surface scratching and chipping that would otherwise damage the screen itself. It’s a whole lot easier to replace a screen protector than to replace an entire screen!

How sturdy should your case be? Well, that all depends on how much action your phone is going to see. But don’t be afraid to buy more than one case. It’s not a bad idea to swap out your hip, slim case for a big rubber one when you’re going hiking or doing something else that might put your phone at risk of a bigger and more dangerous drop or hit. Think about the specific features that you’ll need, too. Does it make sense to get a waterproof case, or should you spend more on extra padding?

Get your iPhone repaired properly

No matter how careful you are, you may someday find yourself with a broken iPhone. But don’t panic yet. You have options.

You should turn to iPhone repair specialists who have been certified by Apple and know exactly what they are doing. But that doesn’t mean that you have to go to the Apple Store. Private repair companies may offer lower prices on the exact same expert repair work that you’d get from Apple itself. On top of everything else, you might get the work done faster when you get out of that long Genius Bar line and head to someone who is more accountable to local customers.

Again, you want to turn to certified experts — an ill-advised attempt at a do-it-yourself repair could cause further damage to your phone and would almost certainly void any warranties that you have (Apple hates it when you try to do this sort of stuff yourself). But be sure to shop around and check out the private local shops, which will offer superior repair services along with friendly customer service and prices that won’t feel quite so, well, Apple-like!
