Apple had a few hardware surprises in store yesterday during its WWDC 2019 keynote, all designed to work together. This includes the new Mac Pro and a new 6K monitor to accompany it.

The refreshed Mac Pro with server-grade parts is cool, but let’s talk about that beautiful Pro Display XDR monitor for a bit.

The Pro Display XDR monitor lives up to its name

If you’re a creative professional who needs color accuracy, you’re probably not reading this as you’ve already put your name down on the waitlist.

Sure, it’s expensive but that’s not the point (and especially not if you work in an industry like the film one, where millions of dollars in hardware is bought yearly). Every part of the monitor has been designed to do one thing – enable the creative mind to do what it does best.

  • The 32-inch screen has a 6K resolution (6016 x 3384), with a huge viewing angle
  • It can output HDR at a constant 1,000 nits, with a maximum of 1,600 nits. SDR content is displayed at 500 nits
  • Those brightness levels come from tonnes of blue LEDs, kept cool by that nifty, over-engineered ‘cheese grater’ texture
  • There’s two versions, a $4,999 ‘standard’ one and a $5,999 version with a nano-texture anti-reflection treatment (unless you do all your work in the dark, you probably want this one)
  • Neither version comes with a stand, or VESA mount (sold separately at $999 and $199, respectively)
  • It’s factory calibrated, with a 10-bit panel and a P3 wide color gamut
  • Apple’s True Tone tech is also inside

Couple all of the tech in the Pro Display XDR with the super-powered new Mac Pro and that means more artwork/3D compositing/video editing/etc on a daily basis. That’s the market Apple has aimed at, and it knows its market. Expect this to sell like hotcakes, even at the $6K without-a-stand price.
