Spotify will soon roll out a feature that lets you block and mute artists you don’t want to listen to. That’s it, nothing crazy.

The feature, which is called “don’t play this artist” is currently being tested on the company’s iOS app. It’s insanely simple: If there’s an artist that keeps popping up in your playlists, radio stations, chart list or for some reason, your library – you can block and mute them entirely. Never again will you have to put up with them ruining your vibe while you peddle your Peloton for a quarter of a mile.

Well, sort of.

First spotted by Thurrott, the feature only works on songs by an individual artist. If the artist is featured on another song with someone else, the block won’t apply to that.

This was a long time coming

Apparently, this is a feature that Spotify decided against back in 2017 “after serious consideration.” This recent development looks like they changed their mind and I guess that’s a good thing.

I have to say, this isn’t a groundbreaking feature or anything, but I know I’m going to use this a lot. My Spotify playlists are often polluted by artists and bands I don’t want to hear from, and given the fact that I can now block and mute them is almost a godsend.

As for now, this sounds like something the company is currently testing, and it isn’t clear when a broader rollout is expected. We reached out to Spotify, but they didn’t immediately respond to our request. We’ll update the post if we hear anything back.
