Apple could release some (probably expensive) over-ear headphones this year

While everyone eagerly awaits the next morsel of news regarding Apple’s beloved AirPods, there has now been a small piece of news regarding the company’s reported over-ear headphones that have been in the works.
Casually slipped in with a report from Bloomberg regarding Sonos news, Apple could be releasing its version of high-end over-ear headphones before the end of 2019. Very little is known past that, but we can look at some other reporting from past year to get an idea of what to expect.
Apple’s over-ear headphones
The first bit of headphones news came to us via Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo almost a full year ago. Via MacRumors, Kuo noted that Apple was looking at headphones that would be “as convenient as AirPods with better sound quality,” and that we could expect them, at the earliest, Q4 of 2018. That time as obviously passed, but another report could gleam reasons as to why that timeframe was missed.
Another report in June, from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, notes that the initial timeframe had to be pushed back due to “development challenges.” While very little is still known about these headphones, it does seem clear that Apple wants to market and brand these separately from the Beats line, which Apple bought back in 2014.
Being a big fan of the AirPods, I’m definitely interested to see what the company could do with a true over-ear variation, but I already know I’m not going to want to pay whatever large price tag is sure to accompany the headphones.
