How-To
Does myQ work with Google Home?
Can your Google home control your myQ garage door opener? We’ll set the record straight.
Quick Answer: Yes, but you’ll have to set up a third-party service like IFTTT to do so.
Chamberlain no longer has a native way to use Google Assistant or Google Home smart devices with its myQ garage door openers (via 9To5Google).
The integration was far from user-friendly, and users particularly hated the awkward phrasing needed to use voice commands.
For example, instead of just saying, Hey Google, close the garage door, they had to say, Hey Google, ask myQ to close the garage door.
Chamberlain's automatic garage door openers are powered by myQ. That gives you app control and linking to Amazon Key, for in-garage deliveries to defeat porch pirates.
As of the recent update, there is no official way to link Google Assistant to your favorite myQ garage door openers. However, there is a workaround through a third-party service, IFTTT.
We’ll show you how.
Connecting myQ with Google Home through IFTTT
IFTTT (If This Then That) is a popular third-party automation app that links to almost every service imaginable.
That includes Chamberlain myQ garage door openers, where you can use Google Assistant to control your door’s basic functions.
It’s worth mentioning that to use this method, you need a paid subscription to IFTTT. When we last checked, the IFTTT subscription price was $2.50 or $5 monthly, depending on usage.
-
Set up IFTTT
Download your smartphone’s IFTTT (If This, Then That) app (Google Play Store) (Apple App Store). Alternatively, you can use the web app.
-
Create an account
If you don’t already have one, create an IFTTT account and sign up for a paid subscription (this costs $2.50 monthly).
-
Connect myQ to IFTTT
Visit the myQ Integrations page on the IFTTT website and connect myQ with your IFTTT account.
-
Connect Google Assistant to IFTTT
Open the Google Home app on your smartphone.
-
Find IFTTT
Inside My Home, tap the Settings icon, scroll down to the Works with Google option, and search for IFTTT.
-
Link the account
Log into your IFTTT account to link the two together.
-
Use applets
IFTTT already has an applet set up to close your myQ garage door. Or pick from the other already configured options.
-
Saying Ok Google, activate close garage will close your myQ garage door when set up.
Wrapping up
It’s annoying that a smart home garage door opener doesn’t have an easy way to use voice commands for control. That said, the phrasing necessary to use Google Assistant was clunky at best.
It’s still clunky while using IFTTT, but at least you can close your garage door while your hands are full of tools or other things.
