Leak reveals major display upgrades for the Pixel 9 series

The next Google event, Made by Google, is coming up soon. The August 13th date has been set aside for this important event. 

Google is set to unveil its next Pixel handsets at this upcoming event, following the release of several official teasers just days ago.

While new Pixel launches always generate buzz, the upcoming release of the Google Pixel 9 series is particularly noteworthy.

Google is not just introducing a new duo; this time, it’s expanding the lineup to include additional devices, marking a significant revamp of the Pixel range.

The first new addition is the new flagship, the Google Pixel 9 Pro XL, which excited Pixel fans as it will be the first Pixel phone with the “XL” moniker after the Pixel 4 series.

Google’s upcoming second folding phone won’t carry the expected name “Pixel Fold 2.” Instead, it will be integrated into the Pixel 9 series, officially called the Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold.

Besides revamping the lineup, Google is also bringing significant changes to the new Pixels, including a radical redesign, hardware changes, and more. 

A recent report from Android Authority reveals that the Google Pixel 9 series will showcase new displays utilizing Samsung’s M14 material. This development marks the latest iteration in the evolution of OLED technology.

M14 will apparently deliver better brightness and longevity and is significantly better than the older M13 technology featured on the upcoming iPhone 16 Pro and current Samsung Galaxy S24 series. 

Brighter displays for Pixel 9, 9 Pro, and 9 Pro XL 

According to the report, the standard Pixel 9 will feature a 6.24-inch screen with a resolution of 1080 x 2424.

The panel will have a 120Hz refresh rate and a higher peak brightness level than the Pixel 8, reaching 1,800 nits during HDR compared to 1,400 nits.

On the other hand, the Pixel 9 Pro and 9 Pro XL’s displays are even better. Google Pixel 9 Pro will feature a 6.34-inch screen (1280 x 2856), and the 9 Pro XL will sport a larger 6.73-inch screen (1344 x 2992).

The peak brightness of both “Pro” Pixel 9 handsets also hits a bit higher at 2,050 nits during HDR – a significant upgrade over last year’s Pixel 8 Pro’s 1,600 nits.

While Google introduced its new “Actua” display with the Pixel 8 series last year—a significant upgrade over previous generations—the company now faces pressure to advance its display technology once more, as competitors are quickly catching up.

Better display for the Pixel 9 Pro Fold, too

The Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold is also getting display upgrades. According to Android Authority, the inner folding display of the 9 Pro Fold will measure 8 inches, which is much larger than the Pixel Fold’s 7.6-inch panel and even larger than the OnePlus Open’s 7.82-inch panel. 

The display will have a resolution of 2152 x 2076, 1,600 nits of peak brightness, up from the original Fold’s 1,000 nits, and a 120Hz refresh rate. 

While the panel seems to be getting a significant upgrade, the major concern is the crease, but at this time, there isn’t much more to share about that yet.

The external display is also changing. It is now taller. The outer panel will measure 6.24 inches, which is 0.4 inches bigger than the original. It will have a resolution of 1080 x 2424 and a peak brightness of 1,800 nits.

Besides the upgraded display, Google is also adding a suite of new changes. The company has already shown off a few hardware upgrades for the Pixel 9 Pro Fold with a teaser video, revealing a slimmer bezel on the inner screen and a more refined design overall. 

Google has set the Pixel 9 series’s launch date for August 13, but we are bound to get a few more glimpses of the new Pixel handsets before the inevitable D-Day.
