Is the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 waterproof?

The foldable smartphone is still a relatively new category of devices. Compared to conventional smartphones, foldables remain more fragile, especially around the hinge.

But the gap in durability is steadily closing with each new generation. In this article, we’ll look at whether the new Galaxy Z Fold 5 is waterproof and how it compares to its predecessor.

Is the Galaxy Z Fold 5 Waterproof?

Short Answer: No

To elaborate, no smartphone is truly waterproof, folding or not. But the Galaxy Z Fold 5 does have an IPX8 rating for water resistance.

This means it has passed testing to withstand submersion in freshwater up to 1.5 meters deep for up to 30 minutes, according to the IP rating system. However, the phone is not resistant to dust or sand.

How Does It Compare to the Galaxy Z Fold 4?

With foldable smartphones, water protection is especially challenging due to the folding mechanism and hinge.

Unfortunately, the Galaxy Z Fold 5 has the same IPX8 rating as its predecessor, the Galaxy Z Fold 4. So there has been no improvement in official water resistance.

Why Isn’t the Galaxy Z Fold 5 Fully Waterproof?

IPX8 water resistance is not the same as being fully waterproof. Water resistance means the phone has internal seals to resist water to a certain degree, but water can still get in under pressure or over time as seals wear down.

True waterproofing that keeps all water out simply isn’t possible with a phone design that requires exposed ports and openings.

Should You Get the Phone Wet?

In general, it’s best to avoid exposing the Galaxy Z Fold 5 to water, especially saltwater or chlorinated water, which can be more damaging.

The IPX8 rating means short-term accidental splashes or dunks in freshwater may not kill the phone, but prolonged exposure is risky.

Samsung advises keeping the phone away from the pool or beach. If it does get wet, rinse it off and dry it immediately. Also, keep in mind water resistance can degrade over time.
