On Tuesday (August 13), Google officially announced the much-anticipated Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold, slightly over a year after its first foldable.

The Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold has many significant changes. It is now part of the Google Pixel 9 series, sports considerable hardware changes, and carries the same price tag as the original Pixel Fold.

The first chunk of the improvements is noticeable in the display department. While the Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold’s display is as stunning as ever, the displays have changed.

  • External Display: 6.3 inches, about the same size as the vanilla Pixel 9 screen, with a 20:9 aspect ratio.
  • Internal Display: 8-inch screen, squarish like the popular foldable OnePlus Open.

Interestingly, the Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold has also become the thinnest book-style foldable in the US. At 10.5mm, it is about 13% thinner than the Galaxy Z Fold 6.

Under the hood, the Google Pixel 9 is powered by the same Tensor G4 chip as the rest of the Pixel 9 series. It sports 16GB of RAM and 256/512 GB of internal storage.

Google has made a few changes in the camera department. They are not as disappointing as the original Pixel Fold but still not on par with the Pixel 9 Pro or Pro XL. The back camera array includes:

  • 48MP primary sensor
  • 10.5MP ultrawide
  • 10.8MP 5x telephoto camera

The Pixel 9 Pro Fold also has two 10MP sensors on both internal and external screens for selfies, video calls, and face unlock.

Last but not least, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold sports a 4,650 mAh battery, which is slightly smaller than the previous generation. However, Google claims over 24 hours of battery life, which should be relatively satisfactory.

Software Front and Other Features

Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold supports Satellite SOS and Google VPN at no cost.

Unfortunately, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold, along with the rest of the Pixel 9 series, will come with Android 14 out of the box, with the usual seven years of security and software updates.

Besides, the 9 Pro Fold has also adopted Google’s improved Face Unlock, which was introduced with the Pixel 8 series; there’s also a side-mounted fingerprint feature.

Let’s not forget the AI features. 9 Pro Fold gets the latest Gemini features and Pixel Screenshots.

Pixel 9 Pro Fold also has a new “Made You Look” feature that uses the external display to keep someone’s focus while snapping a pic with the internal screen.

Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold: Price and Trade-in Deals

There is no such thing as a cheaper foldable phone, and the Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold once again proves that.

While Google generously kept the same $1,799 price tag as last year’s Pixel Fold, it’s still a lot regardless of several upgrades.

If you are still interested, Google is offering a trade-in deal. However, the trade-in value is lacking a bit.

You can trade your old Pixel Fold in the Google Store, which will get you a maximum of $760 for both 256GB and 512GB variants, considering your original Fold is in pristine condition, making the Pixel 9 Pro Fold cost $1,039, which still stings.

On the other hand, Best Buy will give you a $350 Best Buy Gift Card when you purchase the Pixel 9 Pro Fold, so at least you have options.

In contrast, Samsung sells the Galaxy Z Fold for $1,200 and $1,000 for the Galaxy Z Fold 4 so that users could move on to the Galaxy Z Fold 6.

Either way, the Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold is available in two colors: Obsidian and Porcelain. Pre-orders have started, but it will hit the shelves a bit later, on September 4.
